Spray Sizing vs. Starch
Why should anyone use Spray Sizing from Laidlaw when they can use a cheap starch from the grocery store for only $0.99! At first glance it looks like a no-brainer but lets look a little closer and see what that $0.99 can is really costing you.
First lets take a look at why anyone would want to use a sizing in the first place. A good sizing will add luster to the fiber, help with wrinkles and hold creases better, as well as add stain and water repellency features.
If the above paragraph was not enough to convince you that using a quality spray sizing is worth every penny, here are a few more reasons.
Reason number one is that Spray Sizing has certain softeners built into it that helps avoid that stiff feeling that starches usually leave. Spray Sizing will give you a nice crisp and fresh feel without the harsh, stiff feeling that starches leave.
Second is the fact that starches will destroy your press covers. A good sizing will take a lot longer to build up on your press covers. If you are using a $0.99 starch, go over to your press covers and run your thumb along them. If you are leaving a very apparent streak, your starch has most likely been clogging your pads. Clog pads take longer for the steam to come through, so it increases your pressing time. Increased pressing time means you have to leave your boiler on a lot longer. All of a sudden, that $0.99 can of starch is not so cost effective!
One thing to remember when using Laidlaws Spray Sizing is that you do not need to use a lot of it. Most pressers are used to using a
starch so they have fallen into the habit of having to spray a lot on to get the feel they
desire. With spray sizing, you just lightly mist the area and when you go to finish the
garment, the sizing will spread out to give you that nice feel you are looking for. Simply
hold the can eight to ten inches from the fabric and use with a sweeping motion. Once your
pressers get used to Spray Sizing correctly, you will be amazed at the results. So lets look at
the obvious reasons one more time for using a quality spray sizing.
Take all the above reasons and add in the factors of press pads,
labor and how much your boiler gets used, and that $0.99 can doesnt look so cost
effective anymore!
